St Paul’s Cathedral and surrounds

St Paul’s Cathedral

St Paul's Cathedral

When “Old St Paul’s” was gutted in the Great Fire of London in 1666, the task for designing it was assigned to Sir Christopher Wren.  He was also assigned the job of redesigning a further fifty parish churches that had been destroyed in the fire.  Only twelve of those churches have survived as built with a further nine being rebuilt after the devastation of the Blitz.  A handful more remain but the rest have been demolished or remain as ruins.

St Paul's Cathedral

Wren was a real master and I have really come to appreciate his work in the time that I have been in London.  I took some photos of the cathedral and surrounding areas last Sunday during the Race for Life.  I’m really happy with these photos and have finally made the decision to splash out on a new camera.  I don’t think I am quite ready for a DSLR but we shall see.

It occurred to me how often I photograph the outside of churches and buildings as opposed to how often I go inside them.  There is a good reason for that in summer as blue skies and sunshine can make the world of difference to photographs and why would you want to be inside on such a gorgeous day?

St Paul's Cathedral

This is my very favourite photograph of the day.  Did you know that there are strict rules in London and that St Paul’s Cathedral is one of several landmarks that cannot be obstructed by new buildings?  See: Finest views in London saved for future eyes.

St Paul's Cathedral 07

St Paul’s Cathedral was declared complete by Parliament in 1710 and was the tallest building in London from then until 1961 when it was replaced by the Empress State Building.  It was replaced as the tallest structure in London by the Battersea Power Station which was completed in 1953.

London Wall

London Wall

The area in which St Paul’s Cathedral is located is known as The City and it is where the city’s financial services are located.  It is not exactly the modern field of steel and concrete that Canary Wharf is but it is also not a place you’d expect to see some of the oldest structures in Britain.

London Wall

This is part of what remains of the defensive wall that the Romans built around their beloved town of Londinium.  The wall was built between approximately 190 and 225 CE.  Another thing that has grown in the time that I have been in the UK is my fascination with Roman history which I think I first encountered in St Albans and later in Bath.

My fascination with bombed out churches also continues.  I didn’t take too many photos of what remains of Christopher Wren’s Christ Church Greyfriars as there was scaffolding up around it.  I like scaffolding when it is up on new buildings, for example The Shard, but I tend to avoid photographing it on renovations.  The church was destroyed during the Blitz on 29 December 1940.

The Elephant Parade

Elephant Parade Elephant Parade

It seems that no post about London is complete these days without at least a mention of the Elephant Parade.  I love these little things and have to exercise great restraint when I see them!  For the purpose of this story, “exercise great restraint” is defined as “dropping everything and rushing over to photograph them”.  That is contrasted against squealing like a little girl and hugging them gleefully which is what I really want to do when I see them. Oh no! I believe the parade comes to an end today!!! It looks like you can still see them at their official viewing days at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on the 25th, 26th and 28th June and then the indoor herd is at Westfield Shopping Centre from 21st to 30th June.  And then they will all be auctioned off to new homes!

I took all of these photos while taking part in the London City Race for Life 2010.  From as little as £2 (about $3), you can sponsor me in the Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research and you’ll receive one month’s free advertising on Emm in London!. I will feature your 125 x 125 badge in the left side bar on my PR4 blog until 31 July 2010 as well as linking to you in my thank you post. The best part is that the money goes straight to the charity and will not actually go through me.

Preparing for visitors

Alex's pasta carbonara on s/v Caos last night.

We are in the middle of a full house cleaning here. New visitors will be bumping in and out on this boat until mid July with start from tomorrow. Will be very interesting to see how all of our dear friends (who never stayed on Caos before) will enjoy living on a boat with limited space. Especially when we will be five, full grown people sleeping here at the same time some of the nights! Wonderful weeks ahead and Alex brother Nico will be the first one in tomorrow. /Taru

Our lovely readers

We love our readers, we love when you comment here on the blog and when you take the time to write about our planned voyage in your own sites, your notes make our day! Here's one of our new readers that we found through the statistics. Thanks Molly!

In the end of the day, we wouldn't have started this blog if we wouldn't wanted to share this experience with you all. What is also wonderful is that our readers seem to be of all categories. From the experienced sailors, to the family-guys and globetrotters to the business owners, the fashion girls, cultural ladies, nature lovers and whoever!

If we can give a small dose of inspiration to our readers, then we have achieved what we wanted. Thanks all for reading and thanks all of you who spread the word about this voyage. We look forward to have you all with us when we leave Spain in 138 days (or earlier)!

Event: Race for Life 2010

On Sunday I took part in the Race for Life for the third consecutive year.  Race for Life is a sponsored ladies only 5 kilometre race to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

I was runner number 3276 yesterday and I dedicated my run to my Dad who discovered he had cancer in 2006.  It was a really tough time but after surgery, chemo and radiation he was given the all clear in 2007.  I will always be thankful that he survived and every day with him is like a gift.

Needless to say, I had tears in my eyes before the race even began!  I did the race with three of my colleagues this year and one of my colleagues brought along her two little children.

Race for Life 2010 11

The hero of the day was this little girl who walked the entire 5 kilometres (3 miles) without once being asked to be picked up.  In fact, if anything, she was spurring us on at the end by insisting that her mum not overtake her with the baby buggy!

As always, there were tons of gorgeous outfits and all sorts of women were dressed up.  There was even a courageous little girl and her dog!

It was a fabulous day and I am happy to say that I captured even better photos of St Paul’s Cathedral than last year and they certainly deserve their own post.  You’ll also be happy to hear, I’m sure, that I found the London Wall this year!  The weather was just perfect too.

Race for Life 2010 12

It was mostly sunny but every now and again, a little cloud cover came over to cool us down a little bit.  It is just as well because I forgot to pack my sunglasses!

Race for Life 2010 07

The Race for Life is a wonderful fundraising event and I really look forward to it each year.  If you would like to sponsor my race and donate money, please do so by clicking the link below.  From a minimum of just £2, the money goes straight to the charity and does not pass through my hands!  All donors will, of course, receive a little link love from me in a follow up post!

Hotel Recommendation: Phuket Orchid Resort

The Phuket Orchid Resort is located at Karon Beach, the entrance is on Luang Poh Chuang Road (also called Karon Bangla Road) about 2 minutes walk to the beach.. and just a few minutes walk to see me at Sunrise Divers! We see quite a few customers from Phuket Orchid. I walk past the hotel if I head down to the beach. I'd recommend the place for families or anyone wanting a conveniently located hotel, but on a quieter beach than Patong. Not ideal if you want a quiet romantic hotel - it has 500+ rooms, so it's not a small place, but well designed with lot of tropical gardens and (the biggest positive I can see in the reviews) - big, big swimming pools which wind around the grounds surrounded by plants, statues, waterfalls, rocks and bridges. Looks great.

I can also add that I know the GM - his kids are in the same school as ours. So if you stay there and see John, please tell him Jamie recommended the Orchid :)
